Obituary of Margaret Nering
Margaret “Mabel” Nering passed away February 6th, 2018 at the Chelsea in Fanwood with her beloved sons at her bedside. There was nothing more that Mabel enjoyed than her family, her friends and the caring staff at Chelsea, and of course her fuzzy little girl Mitzy. She was 97 years old.
Mable had a full life. She was born in Strichen Scotland to Alfred John Stephen and Margaret Ann (Trail) Stephens. When she was 8 month, old with her mom and dad; Mabel began her life adventure and immigrated to the United States to follow the American dream. She lived in West Orange, Newark, and Union before finally settling in Hillside N.J. Mabel was a Secretary and worked for many years at the Weston Instrument Company Newark, N.J. in the advertising department. Mabel married the love of her life Edward (Eddie) Nering Jr. upon his return from overseas (Africa and Europe) during WWII in May 1947. They set up housekeeping and resided in Grove Street, Elizabeth. Mabel and Eddie eventually moved to Scotch Plains and raised their two sons Jim and Ray. Mabel has experience many changes in during her life; the great depression, WWII, and the prosperity of the 50’s. Mabel enjoyed gardening, baking, history, crocheting, knitting, sewing, and technology. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Scotch Plains. Her interests ranged from biology, archeology anthropology through physics. She was very proud of her collection of fossils and minerals. Later in life Mabel became an accomplished water color painter. Mabel was predeceased by her beloved husband Edward (1916-1981). Mabel will be greatly missed by her boys, James and his waif Lucile, Raymond and his wife Trisha, , her three grand children Susan, Emily and Timothy, her “little girl” Mitzy and her many friends. Friends are invited to visit with the family on Friday, February 9th from 4 to 6 pm. and 7 to 9 PM at August F. Schmidt Funeral Home, 139 Westfield Ave, Elizabeth, NJ 07208, followed by a service at 6 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial will be on Saturday10AM in Evergreen Cemetery in Hillside NJ.
