Edward Almeida, 99, of Elizabeth died at his home on Friday, August 6, 2021. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend the funeral on Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at August F. Schmidt Memorial Funeral Home, 139 Westfield Avenue, Elizabeth, NJ 07208 from 8:00 AM to 9:30AM. Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, Elizabeth, NJ 07201 at 10:00 AM. Interment to follow at Hollywood Memorial Park, in Union, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
Although Edward was born in Elizabeth, NJ, he spent his formative years in Portugal returning to the United States around the age of 18. Edward enlisted in the Army and served in World War II landing on D-Day at Omaha Beach. Upon his return from service he was employed by Singer Company as a screw machine operator where he retired 40 years later. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church and a Eucharistic Minister. He was the oldest living member of the Portuguese Instructive Social Club in Elizabeth.
He is predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth and his brother Antonio Almeida. He is survived by a son, Edward C. Almeida and his wife Silvia of Union, four daughters Elena Bexiga and her husband Jose of Colonia, Irene Livres and her husband Alvaro of New Egypt, Gina Holloway and her husband Jim of Ellicott City, Md and Aida Barbier and her husband Chris of Union. He is survived by his sister Virginia Guerra who resides in Portugal as well as nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
