Obituary of Norma Klug

Norma Brewer Klug, a resident of Elizabeth for all of her adult life, died on December 24 at Elmora Hills Health & Rehabilitation Center in Elizabeth at the age of 91. She was a cancer survivor for more than 10 years. She died of natural causes. She was born in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, England, in 1925, the only child of Hilda and Edward Brewer. The Brewers lived outside of London during the "Blitz" of World War II. Along with her parents, Norma survived the persistent attacks of German fighter planes by hiding in a bomb shelter beneath their home. The family endured severe rationing of food and other essential supplies during the War. Norma married James Klug of Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, a member of the US Army who was stationed in England during the war. Norma was among many young British women who were wartime brides of American GIs. After the end of the war when her fiancé returned to the States, she later joined him and was married here. Norma and her husband had one child, a daughter, Deborah. Norma is the grandmother of Brandon Lugo of Fort Myers, Florida. She has family members who reside in Elizabeth, others elsewhere in the United States as well as distant cousins in England and Australia. Norma was a member of the Calvary Tabernacle in Cranford. She was a homemaker who later worked at a child care center doing what she enjoyed most, being with and caring for children. She kept up with family members and friends by phone and letter on a regular basis. She enjoyed socializing with friends at the Elizabeth Towers in Elizabeth where she resided for 25 years. From the late 1970's until 2009, Norma shared an apartment with her mother until her mother's passing in 2009 at the age of 103. In addition to her parents and her husband, Norma is predeceased by her daughter Deborah. Visitation will take place at the August F. Schmidt Funeral Home at 139 Westfield Ave. in Elizabeth on Wednesday, December 28 from 1PM to 2PM, Service will start at 2 PM. Interment will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Newark.
