Obituary of Noel B. O'Sullivan
Noel B. O’Sullivan, 87, of Elizabeth, died Tuesday at Trinitas Regional Medical Center, Elizabeth. Relatives & Friends are kindly invited to attend the funeral Mass in Immaculate Conception RC Church, 425 Union Ave., Elizabeth at 10 AM on Thursday, 4/11/19. Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Arrangements by the August F. Schmidt Memorial Funeral Home, 139 Westfield Ave., Elizabeth.
Noel was born in Elizabeth & a lifelong resident. He graduated St. Patrick’s High School, Elizabeth in 1951 then enlisted in the Army as a Sargent and served in Korea. He went to Notre Dame in 1956 where he was known as “Sully,” The University was his home for 53 years: first he was an undergraduate then he was given the prestigious Notre Dame Fellowship Honor in his postgraduate studies for a Master’s Degree in Physical Education Department attaining an assistant Professorship in 1964. In 1973 when he became the assistant golf coach under Father Clarence Durbin. He was appointed the first lay faculty member to be head coach of the Irish Golf Team, remaining in that position for the next 16 years.” Mr. Enthusiasm,” as he’s been called, has taught every activity which the department has to offer, including racquetball, handball, swimming, gymnastics & tennis. He was a member of the Monogram Club at Notre Dame. He was a communicant of Immaculate Conception RC Church, Elizabeth.
He is predeceased by his brother John L. O’Sullivan and survived by a brother, Maurice P. O’Sullivan a retired teacher in the Elizabeth public Schools & 2 sisters, Anne O’Sullivan, a retired coordinator of languages in the Elizabeth School System & Mary O’Sullivan, a retired teacher in the Roselle Park Public schools all of Elizabeth.
